Inspiration for pieces explained: Garnet Necklace and Carved Mother of Pearl Pendant

I found the mother of pearl at an antiques shop, and decided it would go perfectly with a garnet necklace. I am so pleased with the result, the creamy mother of pearl goes with the garnets so well.

Inspiration for pieces explained: Green Leaf Necklace

I found the vintage mother-of-pearl leaves at a Vintage Fair on a disintegrating necklace. I had to have them! I paired them with the peridot because it is such a living, green colour. I love the set so much I made another just for me!

Inspiration for pieces explained: Labrodite and Vintage Glass Bracelet

When I found this labrodite, I had to have it. Labrodite contains glimmering purples, greens, blues and yellows, and these beads are simply the best I have ever owned. Now I could have just re-strung, but I decided to get the maximum out of each stone I needed to add contrast and darkness, with the lovely vintage glass. This allows you to view each labrodite as an individual, and revel in their stunning beauty.

Inspiration for pieces explained: Victorian Jet Necklace

I love jet, and wanted to do something special with these pieces. Although they are oddments, taken from Victorian jewellery, I think they work very well in this necklace.

Inspiration for pieces explained: Black Sparkle Stretchy Bracelet

I was given a vintage glass necklace with stunning beads, each contains all the colours of the rainbow. As the overall effect was rather too much, I decided to create a bracelet with black agate and the pretty glass beads. It works really well as the gleaming black grounds and emphasises the rainbow shafts of light that come off the pretty stones.

Inspiration for pieces explained: Garnet and Vintage Black Glass Bracelet

This is another example of beads I have had for a long time, and tried variations to create the perfect look. I tried the garnets with the black, and was instantly entranced by the dark, rich look. The sparkle you get from the garnets suits the matt black of the glass beads so well.

Inspiration for pieces explained: Bright Button Flower Necklace

These buttons belonged to my grandmother, and I've always enjoyed their bright colour and lovely design. However, I found them very difficult to set them into jewellery because, being buttons, they have a rear hole. This means that threading through them didn't work, as you wore the piece they turned over, and I didn't want to wrap wire around them.

As they aren't really something I wanted to add to clothing, I left them in a drawer for years. Then recently I was playing around and discovered a way of mounting them that stopped them from turning. I tried a pair of earrings, but they were just too large, however as a necklace I thought they work perfectly.

Inspiration for pieces explained: Goldfish Pendant

Another find at an antiques shop. This bead is too big for anything but a pendant, but I loved it's soft colours and exquisite detail. And it's green. I love green!

I added the extra beads to it as the original holes were too big to take a headpin. I started with one, but noticing that it gave a pleasing tiered look, added another. I thought the simple loop for a necklace reflected the bead and the extra silver beads.

Inspiration for pieces explained: Vintage Mother of Pearl and Garnet Bracelet

I bought a vintage necklace that was mother or pearl beads and a mother of pearl pendant. I decided to re-string the pendant on a contrasting set of beads (note to self, still to do), which left me with a lot of vintage mother of pearl!

I thought that a bracelet was the best solution, and to add contrast I used my favourite hand-cut garnets to give richness to the bracelet.

This one is slightly unusual in that I created an animation to show it being created!

You can view the animation below, of see the full thing on YouTube: http://youtu.be/QiMzSQGEEEQ (plus also further down)
