Gemstones explained: Carnelian

Carnelian, which is also  referred to as cornelian, is found primarily in India, as well as South America. 

It is a variety of chalcedony, and the best pieces range from deep red to orange in colour. It was once considered strictly the property of the noble class, and people holding a high social status were often buried with it.
