Inspiration for pieces explained

Antique Shamrock Necklace

I was heavily into Jet at one point, trading on eBay quite a lot. In two separate auctions these were included, and I was entranced by the delicate carving.

It's not been an easy decision to sell these, as I know I won't find them again!

Because they are genuine one-offs, I couldn't hope to create earrings, and the delicacy of them meant there was no possibility of creating a bracelet.

Although I found them in different lots, I decided that they should stay together, and realising that the double-shamrock had double holes that would easily take a chain the design grew from that.

Questions from the curious

Getting tangles out of chains

Tangles are easy to get out of necklaces.

Don't panic, first find the main knot, and gently pull at it, switching the bit of chain you are holding occasionally, you want to move the piece continuously.

The idea is to loosen the chain so it's not locked together. Keep tugging gently until it starts to come free, and tease the chain out of the knot. I'd be quite light and free with your movements, give the chain a gentle shake occasionally to help.

Once it starts to come free, try laying the chain out, and check where you are. You can also then hopefully see where parts are getting trapped, and need to feed them through.

The easiest way to prevent tangles is to keep the jewellery in its original box, and put it back carefully after use! If you can't put it in the box immediately, then I suggest you lay it flat and not pool it, as this is the way most tangles develop.

To view a clip of me untangling one of my pieces, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16pxBf6xzlQ note that my hands aren't still, I don't think, I just play with the piece until it unlocks.

Gemstones explained: Amethyst

Amethyst is actually crystalline quartz in shades of purple, lilac or mauve, and is a stone traditionally worn to guard against drunkeness and to instill a sober mind. The name comes from the Greek meaning "without drunkenness".

The ancient Egyptians used the amethyst to guard against guilty and fearful feelings. It is known as the Bishop's Stone, and is still worn by Catholic Bishops.

My jewellery

Kyanite earrings, bracelet, necklace

Kyanite is a gorgeous stone, the colour is lovely, and the stripe is just amazing. I wanted a drippy but elegant look as the colour and shape reminded me of water droplets.

The necklace came from having too few of the stones to go over the top, so I experimented with different styles until I came up with this elegant Georgian piece. I put the rest of the stones into a cascading bracelet, which is still one of my favourites today.

Although this is from my personal collection, I'm happy to reproduce jewellery if possible. Please get in contact with me at enquiries@jewellerydragon.com

Inspiration for pieces explained

Purple Haze Bracelet and earrings

I found these delightful Tanzanite beads through a supplier, and had to have them. I at once knew that I wanted them in a bracelet, and decided that surrounding them with clear quartz was the best way to go, because of the delicacy of the colour, and I knew that the quartz would help to reflect and enhance the stones. I think it ended up really delightful in the end, and the earrings go beautifully.

Due to the small quantity of stones I could  skimp on the bracelet to make a necklace, but decided not to, I wanted the bracelet to be as generous as possible. I also wanted to be generous with the earrings, I could have used clear crystal as a filler, but decided that in this case strength was in numbers, so used all Tanzanite.

Inspiration for pieces explained

Goldfish Pendant

Another find at an antiques shop. This bead is too big for anything but a pendant, but I loved it's soft colours and exquisite detail. And it's green. I love green! I added the extra beads to it as the original holes were too big to take a headpin. I started with one, but noticing that it gave a pleasing tired look, added another. I thought the simple loop for a necklace reflected the bead and the extra silver beads.
